The Day I Went Phishing With My Pastor

warning-phishing-attack

It was just like any other day in the IT department when the emails started coming in to random staff members from our teaching pastor. I began to receive messages from multiple staff asking if the included message was really from David. After a quick glance at the gmail address, and the poor grammar, it was obvious that this was a phishing attempt. It was then that I decided to have a little fun with “David”.  Below is how the email correspondence transpired. *Some names have been changed to protect the innocent

Subject: GOD BLESS YOU BETH

I need a favor from you, please email me back as soon as possible.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Blessings,

David

The staff member replied prior to informing me. Mainly because it could have something do with this weeks service.

Sure, how can I help you?

– Beth

Good to hear from you, How are you? Its my niece birthday and  I need to get her an iTunes gift card that I promised her as

a birthday gift but I can’t do this right now because I’m currently busy checking on a friend at the hospital. Can you get

it from any store around you? I’ll pay you back .

Blessings,

David

It was at this point that “Beth” forwarded the email and the fun began. I replied back to both “Beth” and fake David.

David,

Beth caught me as I’m heading out the door. I can grab one for you. How much do you want on it? How old is your niece?

Matt Pugh
-Assistant to the Director of Weekend Host Teams

You’ll note that I am, in fact, NOT the Assistant to the Director of Weekend Host Teams, but I didn’t want it to be noticed that IT had been involved. “Beth” is the Director of Weekend Host Teams so it only made sense that I’d be running her errands. I also figured a nod to the Office was in order since we were going down this rabbit trail.

Thanks Matt.

-Beth

I had “Beth” reply all to make it look legit and that I was helping her out. When a few minutes had past and I hadn’t heard anything from Fake David, I decided to add a sense of urgency into the correspondence.

Pulling into Target now. Gonna be here a few minutes so let me know how much you want on it.

He apparently doesn’t want me to leave the store the second time around for fear that the same thief will return to swipe another card before he can get the numbers.
At this point I was completely shocked that he hadn’t caught on yet. So I decided to call it a day and reveal what my position really was and that I was on to him from the beginning.

Have you ever seen those scenes in shows where they keep the criminal on the phone for just long enough to figure out where they’re calling from? Well you can do something similar with IP addresses and email. Game on Bro. Game on.

Ps. Don’t mess with us again!

Now, was that really going on this whole time? Obviously not, but I figured if the guy would believe that I was buying Depends for my incontinent great dane, then he would probably believe I was figuring out where he was.

Not sure if he was still clueless, playing the role, or calling my bluff, but he finished up with:

Meaning what Matt

It was at that point that I blocked his email address on our exchange server. Goodbye fake David, it was nice talking to you.
If you’ve ever had a similar situation, comment below. If you haven’t, during your next phishing attempt, take the time to let the perp get to know you.

Not What I Expected

Everyone has a different point of view. That’s what makes us unique. Some times this can get us in trouble, because what I think you want isn’t what you’re thinking you want.

If that doesn’t make sense, ask you’re wife. She’ll know what I’m talking about. Read more of this post

Steve Jobs

Parents, you know that feeling you get when you find the perfect gift for your one year old?  A gift you think they will love and instantly start playing with and learn so much from?  You watch them rip it open, toss it aside, and start playing with the wrapping paper. It’s cute to watch, but you’re heart sinks for a bit. You think they don’t appreciate the gift, or really care who it came from, they just want the wrapping.  I wonder if that’s how God feels right now? Read more of this post

Finding Your Blogging Mojo

Disclaimer:  I haven’t done a book report in close to 13 years, so I’m not expecting much out of this review.  Stick with me though, because this is a great book.

I started blogging less than 9 months ago and still have no idea what I’m doing.  It was a good start, I had an idea of why I wanted to blog and a few posts ready to go in my head.  Those ideas were quickly used up and I found my self grasping at straws and not knowing exactly what I was trying to accomplish.  I couldn’t find the motivation to try putting out any more than one post a week, and my initial burst in readership became a trickle of hits.  Then I got a copy of 31 Days To Finding Your Blogging Mojo.
